Bristol Mayoral Hustings 2021: How can Bristol’s response to the Climate & Ecological emergencies be Fair & Fast?
Bristol is the first city in the UK to declare both Climate & Ecological emergencies – with an ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030 and to restore nature for wildlife and people to thrive together.
The Mayor of Bristol has a unique opportunity to lead the city in its urgent response to these emergencies and accelerate progress in a way that involves and benefits all communities. At this online event we will ask the candidates to set out their vision for how they will achieve this, and to share their commitments to ensure the cities response will be both fast and fair.
To help us to represent your views and questions, we invite you to share your questions for candidates and tell us about what matters most to you and your community. UPDATE: advance question submissions have now closed. You can still submit questions on the night.
Candidates confirmed to take part in the hustings are as follows:
- Alastair Watson, Conservative Party
- Caroline Gooch – Liberal Democrats
- Marvin Rees – Labour Party
- Sandy Hore-Ruthven – Green Party
This event is organised by Bristol Green Capital Partnership in collaboration with Avon Wildlife Trust, Black & Green Ambassadors, Bristol Food Network, CPRE Bristol and Avon, Eastside Community Trust, Friends of the Earth, Sustrans and Extinction Rebellion.
The event will take place online using Zoom webinar and you will receive joining instructions closer to the time.
Please note: this event has been organised from a position of political neutrality. Invitations to candidates to take part in this hustings were issued based on those individuals declared as of 1 March 2021. Participation in this hustings will be limited to those parties or individuals represented in the highest five positions of the 2016 Bristol Mayor election vote share. This will ensure that there is adequate time during the event to allow each candidate a fair chance to answer questions and a reasonable opportunity to respond to points raised by other candidates. This decision is based on guidance from the Electoral Commission in relation to the running of time limited non-selective hustings. We will inform the audience at the hustings of all candidates standing, including those who have not been invited.
