BS10 is host to our next bioblitz as we explore Blaise Castle Estate for a City Nature Challenge special!
The idea behind Citizen Science Sundays is simple – Bristol is home to so many hotspots for nature, so we want to join forces with other like-minded locals and help to map the biodiversity found in our city, whilst taking time to appreciate the nature on our doorstep. Bristol also has a network of dedicated postcode-specific wildlife groups, each with its own iNaturalist project. Visiting a different postcode each time, we’ll be heading to a green space within that postcode and spending a few hours combing the area whilst taking note of what’s growing, flying and thriving there.
Recording our finds using cameras, phones and the iNaturalist app, we’ll be contributing useful data which is available to scientists and conservationists worldwide, helping them to build pictures of biodiversity at all levels. We’ll also be taking notes of the birds we spot, before submitting our records to the Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre.
Everyone is encouraged to join in regardless of level, from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned bird nerds. If you see something interesting but aren’t sure what it is, you can ask your fellow observers, or just snap a photo – we can always identify it later.
Our next postcode of 2024 is BS10, where we’ll be exploring Blaise Castle Estate as part of Bristol’s effort for this year’s City Nature Challenge! CNC is a global event that pits cities against each other in a friendly competition, seeing who can find and make the most observations of nature. For more information (and to see results from previous years) head here.
We’ll be meeting near the cafe at the edge of the estate’s Kings Weston Road car park for a 10am start. There’s plenty of parking on site (pay & display, £3 for 5 hours) and the Firstbus-operated no.3, no.4 and no.15 services stop on Kings Weston Road. Be sure to bring suitable clothing and footwear, as well as something to keep hydrated.
These events are free to attend, but there’s also an option to donate. All donations go directly to the RSPB Bristol Local Group, helping us to put on future events. To learn more about Citizen Science Sundays, iNaturalist and the Postcode Wildlife Groups, you can click here and see our guide.
