Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now and author of Pharmanomics, How Big Pharma threatens global health comes to Bristol to present the research and ideas in the book.
Dearden digs down into the way medicines are produced and exposes the ways pharmaceutical corporations prioritise profit making over global health.
He argues this system has reshaped the relationship between richer and poorer countries, as the access to new medicines and the permission to manufacture them is policed – but that another, fairer health system with justice at its core is possible.
UNAIDS Executive Director and United Nations Under-Secretary-General Winnie Byanyima stated that Pharmanomics “exposes how the problem of medical monopolies is not a few rule-breakers but the rules themselves”.
