Talk: the personal papers of John Addington Symonds

John Addington Symonds (1840-1893) was a writer, poet, literary critic, and a leading cultural historian of the Renaissance. Less well known is that he produced writings of world significance arguing that homosexuality should be freed of religious and legal condemnation.
Symonds was born in Bristol, and Clifton Hill House in Clifton was his home for much of his life. Yet his significance to early homosexual rights is largely unacknowledged in this city. OutStories Bristol, a group that records the stories of LGBTQ+ people in this region, aims to change this.
Archivists at the University of Bristol library have recently completed re-cataloguing their large collection of Symonds’ personal papers. The archivists, Alexander Taylor and Nicky Sugar, will give a talk on 4th October bringing to life new information about Symonds’ life and work.
The talk is free and open to everyone.
Saturday 4th October, 4pm to 6pm.
Peel Lecture Theatre, School of Geographical Sciences – South Building,
University Road, Bristol, BS8 1SS
