The Science Of Coffee and Sleep
Coffee and Sleep Science Webinar with Bristol’s Better Sleep Clinic
Many people are told that coffee is bad for sleep, but the real science behind caffeine, sleep quality, circadian rhythms and morning routines is far more interesting than most people realise. This free online webinar, hosted by Bristol’s Better Sleep Clinic, brings together two sleep specialists to explain what the evidence actually shows, and how you can enjoy your morning coffee without it harming your sleep.
The session is led by Dr David Garley, a GP and the director of The Better Sleep Clinic, an online sleep clinic based in Bristol. He works with people living with insomnia every day and spends much of his time helping people rebuild their confidence around sleep. One of the most common misconceptions he sees is that people believe they must cut out their morning coffee to sleep better. The harder people try to control their sleep with rigid rules and restrictions, the worse sleep tends to become. Dr Garley will explain why morning coffee does not meaningfully disrupt sleep in the way many assume, and why bringing back simple, enjoyable routines can help reduce anxiety around sleep.
Joining him is Luke Gupta PhD, a sleep performance specialist who has worked extensively in elite sport, supporting athletes at national and international levels, including Team GB and the Lionesses. Luke is also a trained barista, giving him a rare combination of expertise in both the science of sleep and the craft of coffee.
The webinar explores topics such as: how caffeine affects the brain, how long caffeine really stays in your system, the difference between alertness and sleep pressure, the body clock, adenosine, and why sleep and coffee are not opposites but actually sit on the same side of the physiology of wakefulness. The session will also explain why people with insomnia often instinctively cut out caffeine, and why this can sometimes make the problem worse.
As this event is hosted by a Bristol-based clinic, the webinar will also reflect on local lifestyle habits, the city’s strong coffee culture and the growing interest in wellbeing across Bristol. Whether you are a regular at one of the independent cafés around the city, someone who enjoys experimenting with home brewing, or simply trying to improve your sleep, this session is designed to be practical, reassuring and grounded in evidence rather than trends.
There will be time for questions at the end. The webinar is suitable for anyone interested in sleep or coffee: members of the public, students, baristas, health professionals, employers interested in wellbeing, or anyone curious about how caffeine really works.
The event is completely free to attend. Registration is required through Eventbrite.
Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to join the webinar on the day. The Better Sleep Clinic is committed to providing clear, science-based information that helps people improve their sleep without relying on restrictive rules, fads or misinformation.
Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge is needed. If you live in Bristol and enjoy either sleep, coffee or learning something new, this is a relaxed and engaging online session you will genuinely enjoy.
