The largest single-person memorial in Arnos Vale cemetery belongs to an Indian man you’ve probably never heard of. There’s a statue of him near College Green, a painting of him in the Bristol Museum and a road named after him in Stapleton. So who was he?

08-bengli-college green-headRaja Rammohun Roy was born in 1772 in Radhanagore, Bengal, and died of meningitis in Bristol in 1833. He’s most famous for helping outlaw the practice of sati, in which Hindu widows were burned alive on their husbands’ funeral pyres. A passionate social reformer, he set up free newspapers promoting human rights and social justice.

Roy, a complex figure, both co-operated with and criticised the British administration, working for the East India Company and later disapproving of its excesses, as well as condemning colonial restrictions on the press. His high-caste background undoubtedly helped him, yet his own family ostracised him for his actions.

Punditji Kamlesh Vyas, the priest at Bristol Hindu Temple, speaks of him as an inspiration:

“What Roy did for our community was excellent, ending a ridiculous practice like sati…he was criticised by many but didn’t think about that. He just thought, no, this is wrong.”

Challenging Hindu orthodoxy led Roy to start to the Brahmo Samaj movement, promoting a more universal Hinduism of one god who embraces everyone, without the need for rigid conservative rituals.

So why should Bristolians care? Because Roy’s quest for spiritual truth made him connections around the world and his friendship with Bristol Unitarian minister, Lant Carpenter, drew him here in 1831.

His ideas inspired Unitarians, then a Christian reform movement also fighting for social justice. Carpenter’s famous social reformer daughter Mary Carpenter was motivated to campaign for women’s education in India. Roy’s visit later drew other 19th century Indian religious reformers to Bristol, continuing a tradition of sometimes uncomfortable, yet enthusiastic, interfaith and multicultural dialogue.

Roy became part of our history when he died here and his tomb attracts visitors and flowers throughout the year. Both Hindus and Unitarians attend a memorial service each September; Arnos Vale’s Janine Marriott says the cemetery is “honoured to have him”.

“He was so forward-thinking, so compassionate…someone who helped his fellow man and one of our biggest international links.”

People have sought to project their views onto Roy and claim him as their own. Was he a radical or a colonial stooge? A Christian convert or a Hindu reformist? An out-of-touch intellectual or a man of the people who helped create a fairer society? All of these things, perhaps – or maybe none of them are quite right.

But what we know shows a complicated man searching for his own truth and fighting for what he believed in. He’s remembered for his actions – and how they inspired people in our city.
